Background of the Study
Digital literacy, defined as the ability to effectively navigate and utilize digital tools, is increasingly crucial in contemporary communication. In Nigeria, disparities in digital literacy between urban and rural populations have significant implications for pragmatic competence—the ability to use language appropriately in context. This study compares urban and rural communication practices to assess how digital literacy influences pragmatic skills such as politeness, indirectness, and conversational repair (Okeke, 2023). Urban residents, with greater access to digital technologies and online resources, may exhibit more refined pragmatic competence, whereas rural speakers might rely on traditional linguistic norms. The research examines a range of digital communication samples, including emails, social media messages, and text chats, to evaluate differences in pragmatic markers and overall communication effectiveness (Afolabi, 2024). Through interviews and discourse analysis, the study explores the impact of digital exposure on language use and how increased digital literacy may lead to adaptations in pragmatic strategies. The findings will contribute to understanding the role of technology in shaping language use and inform educational initiatives aimed at reducing digital divides (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
There is limited research on the effect of digital literacy on pragmatic competence in Nigeria, particularly in comparing urban and rural communication practices. Variations in digital access and proficiency may lead to divergent pragmatic behaviors, potentially affecting interpersonal communication and professional interactions (Okeke, 2023). This gap restricts the development of educational programs aimed at improving digital literacy and pragmatic skills in under-resourced areas. The lack of comparative studies prevents a full understanding of how digital exposure influences language use across different contexts, thereby impeding efforts to standardize communication practices nationally (Afolabi, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by examining and comparing pragmatic competence in urban and rural settings.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess digital literacy levels in urban and rural Nigerian communities.
To compare pragmatic competence between these groups.
To propose strategies for improving digital and pragmatic skills.
Research Questions:
How does digital literacy vary between urban and rural areas?
What is the impact on pragmatic language use?
What interventions can enhance pragmatic competence?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the interplay between digital literacy and pragmatic competence in Nigerian communication. The findings will inform policymakers, educators, and digital training programs on how to bridge the digital divide and enhance effective language use across diverse settings, ultimately promoting better communication and social inclusion (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on digital communication samples from urban and rural Nigerian communities and does not include other regions or offline interactions.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital technologies for communication.
Pragmatic Competence: The skill of using language effectively in context.
Interventions: Programs or strategies designed to improve skills.
